The Paris Agreement came into force in November 2016. This is the first global agreement that commits all countries to more ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Norway was one of the first countries to ratify the agreement. The Paris Agreement gives reason to hope that countries around the world can work together to prevent dangerous climate change. The energy sector accounts for more than 60% of greenhouse gas emissions. Access to renewable energy is therefore essential to sustainable development By partnering with the NDC partnership in March 2018, Jordan has become a member of the global coalition of more than 100 countries and institutions working together to promote climate change measures while promoting sustainable development. Norwegian RV researchers Dr. Fridtjof Nansen are involved in the important work of mapping marine waste in the seabed, especially plastic waste, which causes serious damage to the environment. In November 2016, the European Commission presented its national contribution to UNCLOS to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 14%, with a conditional reduction of 12.5% and, provided international financial support is available. The NDC Action Plan is consistent with national policies and strategies, particularly with the national climate change policy and the national green growth plan for Jordan. Norway`s International Climate and Forest Initiative The NDC Action Plan identifies priority areas in the areas of mitigation, adaptation and cross-sectors and sets targets for the transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy, mixing the share of renewable energy and increasing energy efficiency measures; Strengthening resilience and adaptation to climate change in the water and agriculture sectors; and integrating climate change into local and regional development planning. In April, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation organized, in collaboration with the NDC partnership, a roundtable for international and development partners to present Jordan`s nDC action plan, which sets out the country`s timetable for implementing its national contribution to the Paris Agreement.
Norway is a member of Friends of Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform. Subsidy reform is important for clean air cleansing and unlocking public funds for development efforts. Climate change and environmental damage are two of the most dramatic challenges facing the world today. Many countries are already feeling the effects of climate change. In our part of the world, the changes in the Arctic are particularly dramatic and disturbing. Extreme weather events are more frequent than before, sea levels are rising, and droughts and floods are more frequent. Air pollution alone claims 7 million lives a year. Climate change and environmental damage are destroying ecosystems that have negative effects on development, health and food production. Climate change is exacerbating humanitarian disasters, fuelling conflict and making some areas uninhabitable. It is essential that all countries help prevent further losses and damage from the effects of climate change. This work can save lives and assets and reduce the need for humanitarian assistance in the event of a disaster. The world`s tropical forests are one of the world`s largest carbon sinks, provide livelihoods for millions of people and are home to more than half of the world`s world-famous wildlife species.
Norway allocates a significant portion of the funds to REDD (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries). Since 2007, Norway has allocated up to NOK 3 billion per year for its redD aid budget (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries).
